Als Oldowan werden die ältesten Steinwerkzeuge der Welt bezeichnet. Sie wurden erstmals 1951 von Louis Seymour Bazett Leakey und Mary Leakey beschrieben in: Olduvai Gorge, a report on the evolution of the hand-axe culture in beds I - IV.
